News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
To the Editor:
The last Monday of May is now the official day of remembrance of the American veterans who gave their lives in the protection of our land and our ideals.
The origination of this day was the 30th of May, started by the Grand Army of the Republic, a veterans organization, in 1868, for the fallen heroes of the Civil War. In 1968 the congress passed the Uniform Holiday act, creating three-day weekends which included Memorial Day on the last Monday of May.
As we enjoy the first unofficial weekend of summer camping, friends, relatives, auto races, fishing or just relaxing, we should remember those men and women who died so we can live free.
On this 141st observance of Memorial Day, the Sisters VFW and American Legion Post will host a Memorial Service in the Sisters Village Green at 11 a.m. on May 25.
We invite all in Central Oregon and beyond to join us in the remembrance of those who gave all, and to enjoy a free barbecue after the service.
