Outlaws close out league play with win

The Outlaws baseball team wrapped up league play with an 8-2 win over Elmira at home on Tuesday, May 12.

Aaron Fegenbush scored Chase Kleint on a fielder's choice in the first inning to get the Outlaws on the scoreboard. In the second inning Max Stovall's single pushed Sisters to a 2-0 lead.

The Outlaws loaded up the bases in the fourth. Eric Carlson's fielder's choice scored one run and Sean Heagney's base hit scored another which gave Sisters a 4-0 lead.

Stovall had a two-RBI single in the sixth, and Hayden Hudson and Jacob Rocco each drove in a run with a base hit to put the Outlaws up 8-0.

Elmira scored their two runs in the top of the seventh.

"We just took care of business," said Coach Steve Hodges. "Brandon attacked their hitters, threw lots of strikes and got ahead in the count."

A day earlier Heagney pitched a three-hitter in the Outlaws 2-1 loss at Pleasant Hill. Both of the Billies runs were unearned.

Stovall hit a homerun in the sixth for Sisters' lone run in the game.

The week prior, Sisters lost both their games by just one run. On Thursday, May 7, the Outlaws lost 9-8 in eight innings in a critical match-up against number-one-ranked Marist.

It was a rollercoaster game with a lead change every inning. Sisters had their chance to win in the bottom of the eighth, when Kleint doubled down the right field line to put runners on second and third with no outs. Unfortunately, the next three batters struck out, and Sisters lost by one.

"Both teams battled," said Hodges. "We had great momentum, but their pitcher just wasn't going to have it. At the end their pitcher and catcher did it all. I've got to tip my hat to Kirpatrick (Marist's pitcher), who attacked our hitters, got ahead and challenged us. We just couldn't put the ball in play. It was a disappointing loss."

A day later, the Outlaws lost 3-2 in another heartbreaker at Cottage Grove.

Sisters scored one run in the first and third innings to go up 2-0. Cottage Grove knocked in three in the sixth and won the game. The Lions scored their winning run on a bad hop ground ball that bounced 20 feet in the air off the lip behind third base.

Brandon Morgan pitched six innings, and Chase Kleint came is as relief in the seventh.
