Psychologist helps clients solve problems

Life as a psychologist in a small town like Sisters is not that much different from operating a practice in a more urban area, according to Ken Serkownek, Ph.D.

"The percentage of retired clients is a little higher," said Serkownek. "The most common issues are the same; depression, anxiety, traumatizing experiences, and marital problems."

In private practice since 1975, Serkownek has been licensed in Oregon since 1984. Still the owner of a counseling clinic in Roseburg, Serkownek moved to Bend three years ago before moving to Sisters one year ago.

"Love brought me to Sisters," said Serkownek. "I'm engaged to Annie Andreson, a real estate agent at Reed Brothers here in Sisters."

Prior to becoming a psychologist, Serkownek was a high school teacher and involved in foster care service work. He found that he enjoyed being in helping professions and that he was good at problem solving.

"I feel that what I do as a psychologist is problem solving," said Serkownek. "When people come in to see me it is comparable to solving a mystery. Identifying the problem and finding techniques to assist or make them heal."

With a focus on adults and couples, Serkownek believes in directive, educational therapy sessions.

"My approach is active," he said. "A lot of talking and teaching as well as gathering information."

In his spare time, Serkownek applies his problem solving skills to mystery novels and whitewater rafting on rivers around the world.

His office is located at 382 E. Main Ave. in Sisters. Telephone is 771-0864.
