Disc golf shootout in Sisters

There's going to be a shootout at Hyzer Pines on Saturday, July 25.

Rotary is sponsoring Pro Disc Golf at the course on the Sisters Park & Recreation District (SPRD) grounds. A great family activity, the event runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., is for pros and amateurs alike.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. and demonstrations and disc golf clinics taught by the pros begin at 9 a.m.

Competitors will get a disc, lunch, instructional clinics, and tournament play for the $30 registration fee. The event is free for spectators.

At 9:30 a.m. "Shoot It Out" match play begins. Golfers take their best shot, 200 to more than 400 feet, to the baskets on this 18-hole course. Scores are based on the number of throws.

Field games start at 10 a.m. and will continue all day. There will be some free games for spectators.

Pro disc golf is relatively new in Sisters Country. The Hyser Pines course opened two years ago and was the inspiration of Kathy Kemper-Green, Rotary member. Dedicated players compete in all weather, rain, shine, sleet or snow. One hundred and five players just finished shooting in the snow at Hoodoo last month. Many were from Bend's Hyzer Desert Rebels who compete at the Hyzer Pines course every Tuesday.

Pro Ryan Lane, with Phil Smith, designed and built the course along with help from numerous volunteers.

"It's my life," Lane said of his sport. "I don't think I'd be able to live without it."

Kemper-Green, who was key to raising $20,000 to get the course started, said, "I knew Sisters would do it, so I didn't even worry about the money." She made a lot of phone calls and did a lot of talking.

Sisters Rotary, whose motto is "Service Above Self," dedicates its energies to events that benefit the Sisters community and its families. Pro disc golf is a great activity for parents and their kids. When Kemper-Green approached the board to help with fundraisers, President Kathryn Johnson reported, they were eager to participate.
