Sisters hosts celebration of Western, Indian heritage

Visitors to Sisters will get a glimpse of life in the region's past in the Sisters Western & Native American Arts Festival, September 5-6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Sisters Creekside Park.

Participants will enjoy a variety of Western and Native American arts and crafts from vendors throughout the Sisters Country and around the Northwest. Live music will be featured throughout the weekend by local musicians. The Anvil Blasters and Doug & Katie Cavanaugh will be performing on Saturday, and COYO on Sunday.

Many other events and activities will take place throughout the Labor Day weekend. Have you ever been inside a teepee or been curious about how wool is spun? The festival offers live demonstrations. Find out about buffalo hides, drums, rattles, handmade bow and arrows, beaded bagpipes, ceremonial items and more.

A special presentation by Jess Anders and Greg Booth is on tap; learn about the mustangs from Gayla Nelson or sample Indian Fry Bread.

Vendors will offer high quality art.

Local Sisters artist Barbara Berry has designed the poster, "Painted Ponies," for the 2009 event. They are available for sale at the event or at the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce for $5.

For more information on the festival contact Jeri Buckmann, events director, at [email protected] or 549-0251.
