News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Outlaws volleyball team notches wins in league, tournaments

In their season opener, Sisters took down the White Buffaloes of Madras in three straight sets, 25-23, 25-12 and 25-20.

The Outlaws jumped out ready to play but really found their momentum in game two. Kill leader for the night was Hannah Harrer with 16 kills, followed by Haylee Schaab who finished with 12.

Sophomore Chelsie Reifschneider logged four kills for the night and Courtney Satko added two. Megan Minke led the team with three blocks in the match.

Harrer said, "I was just on tonight. The whole team was. Our passing was phenomenal, which made it easy for us to run the more difficult plays. And Kaity (setter) did an excellent job of running the team all night. It was a fun night and the whole team worked together very well. It was an awesome start to the season."

Setter Kaity Douglass and libero Jessie Snow each had seven digs in the match. The Outlaws finished with a 96 percent serving average.

The previous week, Friday, September 4, Sisters participated in the Summit Jamboree. This was the first time the Outlaws did not play in the Sky-Em jamboree. Coach Diane Bremer told The Nugget it was a great opportunity for the Outlaws to play a level up (5A). Sisters ended up 4-2 for the day.

Sisters defeated Redmond (25-23), Mt. View (25-20) and Madras (25-20). The Outlaws suffered a 21-25 loss to Summit and a 20-25 loss to Crook County.

Courtney Satko's outstanding blocking stood out in the Outlaws' game against Summit. Satko did a great job blocking Summit's outstanding outside hitter, Kelsey Zimmerman. In one rally, Courtney got the block, Summit dug it out and set Zimmerman again and then Courtney stuff-blocked Zimmerman for the point.

Bremer said, "It was one of those plays that electrified the crowd. Overall, the jamboree was a great confidence builder for our new squad. The girls know now how they are capable of playing and who they are capable of playing with. We had a lot of fun."

On Thursday, September 10, the Outlaws traveled to Stayton and beat the Eagles in three straight sets, 25-20, 25-18 and 26-24.

Courtney Satko stepped up her game and led the Outlaws in the win. Satko was quick, aggressive and powerful at the net and finished the night with 10 kills. Harrer had 11 kills and Schaab added five.

Libero Jessie Snow led the backcourt with 27 digs, followed by setter Kaity Douglass with 11 digs and Schaab with seven. Douglass also had 31 assists in the match.

On Saturday, September 12, the Lady Outlaws were crowned champions at the Cascade Tournament.

Bremer had praise for several of her players.

"Haylee (Schaab) was our 'go-to girl' all day," said Bremer.

"She has such a great read on the court and can swing down the line or cut the angle ball efficiently.

Kaity (Douglass) worked hard all day and set the entire tournament.

Official stats are not available, but Kaity logged a huge amount of assists and helped us tremendously from the service line.

Freshman Megan Minke came in near the end of the day to help out in the middle and certainly made her presence known on some quick sets in the middle that went straight to the floor.

Mary Jane (Schulte) was solid at right side and played some great defense.

Marissa (Calavan) and Sydney (Stoneback) also did a great job on defense.

Lizzy (Carhart) and Chelsea (Reifschneider) helped out at the net in some different player combinations.

It's nice to have the diversity to move players around."

The Outlaws will face Pleasant Hill on Thursday, September 17.
