Girls soccer notches third win

The Lady Outlaws continued their winning streak when they trounced the Central Panthers 8-0 at home on Tuesday, September 15, and two days later shut out the Hawks 8-0 at La Pine.

Sisters got off to a slow start in their match-up against Central and didn't score until the 21-minute mark. Remarkably, the goal came from stopper Loryn Cummins. Central's strategy was to overload the middle, which made it very hard for the Outlaws' forwards and midfielders to penetrate. Cummins made a smart assessment of the situation and took the ball upfield herself and scored an unassisted goal just outside the 18-yard box from the middle of the field.

The floodgates opened and Sisters went on a scoring frenzy.

Over the next 17 minutes the Outlaws scored five goals and pushed to a 6-0 advantage. Breezy Tewalt scored an unassisted goal from 32 yards out, Marin Allen scored a shot right up the middle off a great cross from Cummins, and Karah Herr drove one in right past the keeper off a Michelle Young cross. Herr returned the favor two minutes later and made a nice pass to Allen which pushed Sisters to a 5-0 lead.

Five minutes before the half, Coach Nik Goertzen made some substitutions. Freshman Harley Barlow entered the game, took a pass from Mindy Marr and scored to give the Outlaws a 6-0 lead at the half

"It was a perfect-timed pass and a perfect finish," said Goertzen.

In the second half, Geortzen moved his defense to offense and put his offensive back on defense. Players were instructed to only allow freshmen to score if they had the opportunity to finish or else go to an eight-touch pass system.

Sisters notched another goal when Barlow passed the ball to the left front to freshman Riley Barrett who finished the ball at the 54-minute mark and gave Sisters a 7-0 advantage.

Goertzen said, "With 18 minutes left in the game the referee awarded us an unusual indirect free kick inside the 12-yard mark. Central took all of their girls and set them post to post on the goal line so we wouldn't score. Peggy Barrett (sweeper) finished the ball to score."

The Outlaws went up 8-0 and were told not to score any more goals for the remainder of the contest. The game ended in a 8-0 shutout.

Goertzen was pleased with the win and is happy with his team's progress so far.

"I like what I see in terms of our team chemistry and camaraderie. It's good and very positive. We're clicking and everybody is focused and on the same page."

Sisters earned an easy win over La Pine on Thursday.

Marin Allen got the Outlaws on the scoreboard early, just a little over two minutes into the contest, thanks to a great assist by Zoe McAllister.

At the 18-minute mark, the Hawks had a free kick out of the goal, which Jody Roech stopped. Roech trapped the ball and then punched in a perfect kick up and over the keeper's head. The Outlaws went up 2-0.

Twelve minutes later Allen kicked in her second goal of the game off an assist from Kelly Cole.

The Outlaws scored three more times over the next ten minutes with goals from Karah Herr, Breezy Tewalt and Amity Calvin. Allen and McKenzie Cooper recorded assists in the first and third goals, respectively.

Sisters entered the half with a 6-0 advantage.

At the half, Goertzen gave his team the same instructions as he'd given them in the previous game: only freshmen were allowed to score and they had to use the eight-touch passing system.

Freshmen Harley Bowler scored at 46 minutes off a Mindy Marr assist and 22 minutes later freshmen Riley Barrett punched it in to cap Sisters scoring.

The Outlaws will take on No.-7-ranked Marist on Tuesday, September 22.
