News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Outstanding performances by Chase Klient and the offensive line led the Outlaws to a 28-14 win over the Madras White Buffaloes on Friday, September 18.
Sisters came out running a ball control offense, but the first two series were marred by interceptions and missed assignments. Madras returned one of the interceptions for a touchdown, to go up 6-0.
From that point on, the Outlaws offense dominated the game. Sisters took the ball on their own 13-yard line to start the third series and marched 87 yards in seven plays. On fourth and two, the drive was capped by a 65-yard TD run by Chase Klient. Alex Novotny kicked it in for the extra point and the Outlaws took a 7-6 lead.
On Sisters' next possession on their own 47-yard line and seven plays later, Klient bowled his way into the end zone from four yards out. Again, the Novotny kick was good and the Outlaws pushed to a 14-6 lead.
At the start of the second quarter, Madras came right back and tied it up. The White Buffaloes executed their drive well and ran it in for the two-point conversion to even the score at 14-14.
The Outlaws' defense shut down Madras for the remainder of the game.
The ball came back to Sisters on Madras' 40-yard line with 6:50 left in the half. The Outlaws went 60 yards in 17 plays. Klient went over from the three-yard line with 15 seconds left on the clock. Sisters held a 21-14 lead as they entered the half.
Sisters' offense controlled the game during the third quarter, but were not able to get in the end zone. The Outlaws dominated the time of possession, and the defense only allowed Madras nine plays in the quarter.
Again, Sisters' defense held Madras at the start of the fourth quarter. The Outlaws took possession and went 63 yards. Eric Carlson put the ball in from the one-yard line to score. The extra point was good and Sisters pushed to a 28-14 lead.
The Outlaws' defense continued to dominate, and any opportunity that Madras had was shut down. Sisters continued to own the time of possession, and with three-and-a-half minutes left, the Outlaws ran out the clock.
Sisters' defense only allowed Madras 17 yards in the second half. The defense was led by Max Stovall, Randon Beech and Hayden Hudson, along with Jared Nelson and Gilbert Porraz. Stovall led the defense with 14 tackles and Hudson and Beech each recorded eight.
According to Coach Bob Macauley, the three defensive backs, Marcus Arends, Alex Novotny and Brandon Morgan, all had their best game of the season.
"The defense played their most disciplined game by far this year," said Macauley. "They recorded seven sacks which really hampered Madras' ability to move the ball. It was exciting to watch them play at that level.
"The offensive line, consisting of Bryce (Alderman), Andrew (VanDiver), Randon (Beech), Max (Stovall), Hayden (Hudson), Randy (Ketchum), Nate (Utley) and Chase (Klient) were the most noticable factors of the game, and Drew Johnston also did a very good job blocking for Chase."
Klient rushed 36 times for 276 yards and three touchdowns.
"It was a good win for us," said Macauley. "I'm super excited about the kids' performance on the field. We've come 100 miles in the past three weeks, and the kids' character and work ethic has been outstanding. I'm confident we're ready to begin league."
The Outlaws will host the Billies of Pleasant Hill, who enter the game at 3-0, on Friday, September 25.
