Cyclist injured in collision with deer

A deer that bolted onto the McKenzie Highway (Highway 242) on Wednesday afternoon ran into a bicyclist cruising eastbound down the road at about 30-35 mph, causing the cyclist to crash.

According to Deschutes County Sheriff's Office reports, a motorist heading westbound saw the deer run onto the highway and collide with the cyclist. The motorist stopped and rendered first aid until paramedics arrived.

"He was wearing a helmet, which was a good thing," said Sisters fire medic Shawn Vial.

The cyclist was transported by AirLink helicopter to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.
