Motorhome burns to the ground

A luxury motorhome and the vehicle it was towing burned to the ground on Santiam Pass on Thursday.

According to Oregon State Police Trooper Greg Love, no cause for the fire has been determined.

"They were in a line of traffic and somebody noticed smoke," Trooper Love told The Nugget.

The driver, a man from Bend, pulled off the highway. A passerby tried to attack the fire with a fire extinguisher, but it quickly came apparent that the fire was raging out of control.

Fire crews from the Forest Service, Oregon Department of Forestry and Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire Department responded to the blaze.

"They actually did have some spots go up the hill, so it had the potential to become a wildfire," said Sisters Fire Chief Tay Robertson.

Forestry crews caught those spots while Sisters firefighters were called in to put foam on the inferno engulfing the vehicles.

"When you get that big a mass of burning hydrocarbons, you really need to foam," Robertson said.

There were some dangers in dealing with the blaze.

"There was some ammo that went," Trooper Love said.

A couple of propane tanks also exploded.

"One of them went all the way across the highway," Robertson said.

Despite the intensity of the fire, no one was injured.
