News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Outlaws volleyball team kicked off league play with a resounding win over the Billies of Pleasant Hill on Thursday, September 17. Sisters won in three straight sets: 25-6, 25-8 and 25-10.
The following week, on Tuesday, September 22, the Lady Outlaws beat league rival Marist at home in four sets. Two days later Sisters notched their third consecutive league win when they defeated La Pine at home in three sets.
The Outlaws came out ready to play and controlled the pace of the entire match against the Billies.
"It was a very successful night for us to not lower our level of play against a weaker opponent," said Coach Diane Bremer. "We executed very well tonight."
Haylee Schaab was kill leader on the night with 14 kills, followed by Hannah Harrer, who finished with six. Harrer added four blocks in the middle as well. Mary Jane Schulte had three kills for the Outlaws in game two. Chelsea Reifschneider added two kills in the match and had an impressive serving run in game three.
Setter Kaity Douglass did a great job running the offense and logged 19 assists on the night. Libero Jessie Snow led the defense with 15 digs, followed by Schaab who had nine. Marissa Calavan and Sydney Stoneback each had three digs as well.
The following week, Sisters beat the Marist Spartans at home in four sets to go 2-0 in league. Scores of the match were 25-17, 25-19, 29-25 and 25-18.
"We knew it would be a tough match against Marist," said Bremer. "Marist's 6-foot-1-inch middle hitter, Allie Rogers, was formidable at the net. She was effective blocking us and hitting the slide from the right side. However, we overpowered them through the match. Our outside hitters were powerful and dominated at the corners."
Schaab had an outstanding performance and logged 20 kills in the match. Outside hitter, Courtney Satko, also played an impressive game and finished the night with 10 kills.
Middle blocker Hannah Harrer was like a wall at the net and logged eight blocks and 16 kills. Freshman Megan Minke logged her first four kills on the Outlaws' home turf.
"Megan did a great job at the other middle position for us," said Bremer.
Junior Mary Jane Schulte came out strong for Sisters in game one and made some beautiful shots from the right side.
Setter Kaity Douglass finished with 32 assists in the match.
"Kaity did an outstanding job of running our offense," said Bremer. "Kaity has a big job and does it very well."
The Outlaws also played a strong defensive match, led by Snow, who logged 20 digs on the night, followed by Schaab with 15, and Satko with 11.
Bremer made note of two key defensive players.
"Sydney (Stoneback) played libero for one game and handled the pressure and excitement of the first home match well," she said. "Missy Calavan is doing a great job for us also. She is quick and can pass a very fast ball to the setter, which just speeds up our attack tremendously.
"We need to keep taking care of business and continue getting stronger defensively. At this early point in the season, we are playing very solid volleyball."
Two days later, Sisters beat the La Pine Hawks at home in three straight sets with scores of 25-18, 25-11 and 25-14.
Kill leader for the night was Schaab, with 13 kills. Harrer had five kills on the night and Satko and Reifschneider added four each.
Douglass had 26 assists in the match and was perfect from the service line, going 10 for 10. Douglass also led the defense with 13 digs, followed by Snow, who recorded 12.
Sisters is currently 3-0 in league and 14-2 overall. The Lady Outlaws were to travel to Elmira on Tuesday, September 29, and host Junction City on October 1.
