News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The girls soccer team earned a 4-3 victory at Junction City on Tuesday, September 29, and two days later notched a 9-0 shutout at home against Creswell.
Sisters persevered through sloppy, heavy and wet field conditions in their win against the Tigers on Tuesday.
Coach Nik Goertzen said, "This was the first time in four years we've won at Junction City and it feels absolutely wonderful."
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead 13 minutes into the contest, but Sisters came back 20 minutes later to tie it up at 1-1. Marin Allen scored on a bullet shot that went up and over the top of the goalkeeper's head. Jody Reoch was there for the assist.
The goal from Allen totally energized Sisters, and two minutes later the Outlaws scored again. Reoch scored on a pass from Michelle Young to push the Outlaws to a 2-1 advantage.
JC squeaked one in off a freak kick just one minute before the clock ticked down to zero to end the half. The Outlaws and the Tigers entered the half even, at 2-2.
Amity Calvin punched in a deflection at the three-foot mark right in front of the goal four minutes into the final half for Sisters' third goal. At the 66-minute mark the Tigers tied it back up at 3-3.
Six minutes later, after a change in formation, the Outlaws capped their scoring with an unassisted goal by Reoch and the Outlaws walked away with the win.
Keeper Sara Small said, "When we get it together on the field and we're all on the same page, we play so well together and our timing is perfect. That happened today."
Goertzen added, "The game was very physical and it was just a gut-check win for us. In the three years I've coached here at Sisters, this is one of my proudest moments. We banded together, overcame adversity and won a tough, hard-nosed game. These are the kind of games where teams build character and this was a huge character-building win for us."
Marin Allen led the Outlaws with a hat trick in the Outlaws' win over Creswell on Thursday. Allen scored all three goals in the first half of the game. Mindy Marr and Zoe McAllister also knocked in goals for Sisters, and at the half the Outlaws held a 5-0 lead.
Sisters got goals from Breezy Tewalt, McKenzie Cooper, Michelle Young and Kelly Cole in the second half to secure the victory. Reoch, McAllister and Young each recorded an assist.
Senior Mindy Marr stated that she's excited about the possibilities that lie ahead for the Outlaws.
"This is probably one of our best years since my freshman year," she said. "We've really bonded and we have the skills and talent to go far into the playoffs this year."
Sisters is currently 5-1 in league and 6-1 overall. The Outlaws play at Cottage Grove on Tuesday, October 6, and the following Monday, October 12, the Outlaws will host the La Pine Hawks.
