New florist takes on shop in Sisters

Deanna Brainerd loves flowers, and has ever since her childhood, when her parents owned a florists' business.

"I've been in the floral business since I was a kid," she said. "It's my thing."

She's operated her own business in Bend doing weddings and other events requiring floral arrangements, but she's always wanted to own and operate a shop. Her husband Eric has wanted that, too.

"He's always saying 'wouldn't it be cool to have a shop in Sisters,'" Deanna said.

The opportunity came up suddenly when Patricia Capps, owner of Wild Dusty Rose, started looking for someone to purchase and take over operation of the flower shop at the corner of Hood Avenue and Elm Street.

"Patti is a great person to follow," Brainerd said. "She was really wanting someone who would come in and take really good care of her customers."

Just like that, Flowers By Deanna was born. The shop opened on Monday, September 28.

"It's been a whirlwind - but it's been a cool whirlwind," Brainerd said.

Brainerd's floral styles are similar to what customers have become accustomed to, and she keeps her cool under the pressure of deadlines. She simply loves the trade, discovering a customer's needs and meeting them. She especially loves doing weddings.

"That's probably just the girl in me," she said. "Everybody loves weddings."

The Brainerds say they have received a warm welcome from the Sisters business community, with many local merchants stopping by to say hello.
