Lumberjack show headed to Sisters

From Timber to Turned Wood is celebrating Oregon's 150th Birthday, highlighting Sisters' rich history in the logging and timber industry, and its transition to an arts, culture and recreation-based economy.

The show is planned for Saturday, November 7, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the site of the new Sisters Village Hotel (across from Les Schwab Tire Center on Hood Avenue).

The Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce has announced the addition of the TimberWorks Lumberjack Show to this event. TimberWorks Lumberjack Shows (formerly Scheers Lumberjack Shows) is an exciting and entertaining company that provides a unique blend of sports, history and comedy.

The show includes an opportunity for the audience to experience a nostalgic 1900s-style logging competition.

"The addition of TimberWorks Lumberjack Show is an amazing opportunity for Sisters," said Jeri Buckmann, Sisters Area Chamber events director. "These folks exemplify the true spirit of the lumberjack and bring this rich history to life for all of us to enjoy."

Combining the romantic image of Paul Bunyan and the modern real life flesh-and-blood lumberjack athletes, each 30-45 minute show features top world-renowned athletes clad in checkered shirts and steel-toed boots. Each show is accompanied by a theatrical narration delivered by one of their comedic announcers.

The show includes numerous events including axe throwing, log rolling, cross-cut sawing, hot sawing and chainsaw carving.

Old-time lumberjacks in the logging camps of North America traditionally used these centuries-old skills. To pass idle time, lumberjacks would challenge each other in a head-to-head competition where their skills were put to the test. Although technology and machinery have replaced manual labor, the skills are still used today by the TimberWorks Lumberjack Show.

Also planned are historical demonstrations, live music, talks on sustainable harvesting, turned-wood artists and live chainsaw carving.

From Timber to Turned Wood is sponsored by The Roundhouse Foundation, Swiss Mountain Log Homes and the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce. For more information call 549-0251.
