News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The girls JV soccer team defeated Cottage Grove 1-0 at home on Wednesday, October 28, to wrap up their season with a 7-4 record.
Sarah Zubrick scored the winning goal for Sisters. Cottage Grove committed a foul just outside the corner of the penalty box. Three Lady Lions made a wall, but lined up incorrectly, leaving a clear shot at the near post. Zubrick saw the opening, blasted a shot around the wall that grazed the crossbar and didn't give the keeper any chance to make the save.
"It was a beautiful shot," said Coach Scott McAllister.
Sisters scored a total of 41 goals for the season and only allowed their opponents 17. Sarah Zubrick led the team in scoring with nine goals in 11 games. Zoe Wavrin and Claire Seibold scored six each, and Becca Pelham and Sabrina Dolson each recorded five.
McAllister told The Nugget that one of the biggest surprises of the year was Claire Seibold's play as a goalkeeper. Seibold had a couple of training sessions at the goalie position early in the season and then played as if she had years of experience.
In the first game of the season, Seibold had 23 saves in the goal. In Sisters' final game against Cottage Grove, Seibold recorded six saves, two of which were diving saves. The other four were breakaway opportunities that Seibold stopped by charging hard off the line and taking the ball from the opponents feet.
Captains Zoe Wavrin and Becca Pelham provided experience and strong leadership on the field. Returning sophomores KC and Sabrina Dolson were effective in any position they were placed on the field, and midfielder Julie Cristiano did a great job connecting the offense and defense.
The Lady Outlaws suffered an unfortunate loss early in the season when Jenny Ortega suffered a knee injury but they were able to pick up transfer student Rachel Sanders from Washington with three games left in the season. Sanders added a strong presence on the left side of the field.
Jordyn Clymens, Shennan Chick, Kaylyn Scott and Lauren Chauncey were new to the team this year and added depth to the lineup that had been missing in the past.
McAllister told The Nugget that the Lady Outlaws' defining game of the season was their game at Cottage Grove on artificial turf. Due to injury and illness, the team was forced to play with 10 players, which is one player short, and they still "managed to hold CG scoreless for the first 75 minutes of the contest.
"After CG scored, our girls increased their intensity and played with heart," said McAllister.
McAllister added, "The girls really gelled as a team this year, were very supportive of each other and always kept each other up. This team possessed discipline, respect, teamwork and camaraderie. Each time the girls stepped onto the field, each of them gave a full effort and the team played at a very high level of intensity. The girls surpassed our expectations and the hard-fought 1-0 victory over CG was a perfect end to a great season."
