Sisters artist releases first book

Sisters area watercolor artist Kathy Deggendorfer has just released her first book.

"Smells Like Spring" is the story of a curious yellow dog sniffing out adventure in his neighborhood. Deggendorfer wrote and illustrated the story.

When asked how she got started down this artist's path, Deggendorfer says, "When I was a kid I used to spend hours writing poems and doodling - and look where it got me!"

Where it has gotten her is to some pretty amazing places: Last year Deggendorfer was selected to create the official State of Oregon Christmas ornament for the White House Christmas tree.

Deggendorfer is known for her colorful watercolors and for her creative collaborative work with quilter Tonye Phillips.

"I love the 'translations' into quilts done by my friend, Tonye Phillips. This year we even made shopping bags," she said.

Their collaborations and Kathy's work are featured at High Desert Gallery, on Cascade Avenue in Sisters.

Deggendorfer's decision to self publish seems to have been a good choice for her. She was approached by an agent who loved the illustrations, but she says "I was so ready to have this project finished and in my hands that I just couldn't wait to go through the process of submissions to publishers. I am thrilled at the quality of the color and I'm glad I chose to go with a hardbound edition with a beautiful glossy dustjacket."

The book is available only from the artist herself. You can get your own personally signed and embellished copy at the Sisters Art Works Holiday Open House on December 5, 204 W. Adams Ave. from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Contact Deggendorfer by e-mail at: [email protected] to order. The price (including the original embellishment) is $29.95.
