News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
As winter descends on Sisters Country, it brings hardship for many area families struggling to make ends meet.
Seasonal employment is falling away and cutbacks to jobs in the area leave many facing a hard time putting food on the table.
"We've been pretty busy at the food bank this month," said Dave Huni, spokesman for Sisters Kiwanis. "We served 123 families last month, total. That was kind of a record."
Hygiene items remain in significant demand; such items as toilet paper, soap and toothpaste cannot be purchased with food stamps, leaving some to do without.
Donations of such items are appreciated. They can be made during regular food bank hours, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, 225 N. Oak St. On the first Thursday of each month the hours are extended to include 5 to 7 p.m.
According to Huni, staple items such as flour and sugar are also in demand.
"We'll take whatever we can get," he said. "We just can't get enough from (aid organization) Neighbor-Impact sometimes."
Cash donations to the food bank may be made to Sisters Kiwanis Club, P.O. Box 1296, Sisters, OR 97759.
