Frigid weather smacks Sisters

Jack Frost didn't just nip at Sisters this week - he bit down hard.

Temperatures plunged to 15 degrees below zero (or further) on Monday night.

The cold caused a power outage that forced the cancellation of school in Sisters on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service forecast calls for continued cold temperatures, with highs slowly creeping back up into the low- to mid-30s by next weekend. Lows will hover into the teens until the weekend, when they should rise into the more usual 20-degree range.

The Humane Society recommends taking extra precautions with pets during the frigid weather, bringing them inside at night and making sure water bowls don't freeze.

Avoid frozen pipes by running a trickle of water overnight.

Have your battery checked. A faulty battery is the usual culprit for failure to start on extremely cold mornings. Use lock lubricant to prevent frozen door locks and prevent doors from freezing shut by placing a plastic bag between the door and the car frame.

Keep your gas tank at least half full.
