News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Letters to the Editor 12/09/2009

To the Editor:

The first time I called Jim Anderson was about the absence of quail in my yard.

He told me about the feral cats in Sisters and Deschutes County. They were feeding on all the ground dwellers.

The second time was when a hawk came down right outside my front window and took down a quail. It was a sight to see and turned out to be a Cooper's hawk. A rare sight.

I have read and enjoyed Jim's columns in The Nugget from the beginning. I always learn something, plus, he spins a great yarn. I really liked last week's story, "Making do."

I'm glad you have Jim as one of your writers.

To the Editor:

Special heartfelt thanks to the man who stopped to investigate three cardboard boxes on the side of the road near Aspen Lakes Monday night, December 7.

Inside these boxes were four frightened young cats that could have frozen to death with the subzero temperatures had he not stopped and brought them to a safe home.

There are no-kill pet rescue organizations in our area that encourage folks to contact them for assistance should they no longer be in a position to care for their pets.

As a gentle reminder, please ensure outdoor pets have a heated and/or properly insulated shelter, access to fresh (not frozen) water and enough to eat during frigid weather.

Local vets and the feed store may provide an avenue of information. I am available to assist folks in locating resources to keep their pets safe.
