News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
William H. Herget was born in Oakland, California, September 16, 1928 and grew up in the San Francisco Bay area until he was about nine, when his family moved to Alturas, California.
He had many happy memories of growing up in Alturas and learned to hunt, fish and appreciate nature there.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a teenager and served as a waist gunner on a B-17, flying missions out of England over Germany. At the end of the war on the European front he was transferred to New York for medical evac training and served out the rest of his enlistment in Goose Bay, Labrador.
He was very proud of his service in the military, and always loved the B-17 aircraft.
He lived in Florida for a number of years and eventually moved to California and then to Oregon, where he is still fondly remembered as the owner/operator of the B Bar B Tavern, in Sisters.
He was a man who loved and embraced life's experiences, and he was particularly fond of hunting, fishing and playing cribbage.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Dorothy. He is survived by daughters, Cathy of Mount Dora, Florida; Donna of Enterprise; and Georgeanne of Lake Mary, Florida; three sons, Gordon of Orlando, Florida; Dave of San Jose, California; and Richard of Bend; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and long-time companion, Bobbe Leonhardy of Bend and her children, Jay, Tracy and Rachel.
He left us in this world on December 3, and will be missed by us all.
Donations in his name may be made to Partners in Care Hospice or the Deschutes Co. Humane Society.
