News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Art is essence of life for Sisters student

"I would bet that her blood is red, yellow and blue, like that of a color wheel, as art exudes from her very being," says Sisters High School Art Department head Mike Baynes of his student Loryn Cummins.

The high school senior's passion has roots in a variety of sources. Both her parents have degrees in art, and at home she is surrounded by art as well. Her family owns Bedouin and Navigator News that are filled with visually exciting merchandise, all of which has had an influence on Cummins.

Cummins' art experience encompasses a wide range of skills; painting, ceramics, jewelry and drawing. She began showing an interest in art as a youngster, and continued through middle and high school.

"Loryn has been in the art room since she was a freshman, and I have enjoyed watching her grow into a great young artist and a remarkable young lady," said Baynes.

A more open schedule and time for independent art study has given the senior more time to concentrate on her future career. Cummins says she plans to pursue at least a minor, if not a major in art at college.

"Art will certainly have an impact on my future," Cummins said.

At last year's national Scholastic Art & Writing competition, Cummins took home a gold medal for her multimedia piece, titled blank. Of all the entries, there were five awards, and four went to Sisters students, Cummins taking home a gold.

"I think it's pretty cool that Sisters was able to make such a showing," she said.

Cummins was honored as a featured artist at the high school's Coffee House, which benefits the school's arts programs.

"Loryn's talents are many, but it is her spirit that stands tallest. She will be remembered for her great attitude, beautiful smile and her ability to make art out of almost anything," said Baynes. "I am honored to be one of her teachers. I am sure she will always have art in her life, and will be a proponent for the value of art, no matter what she does for a career."
