City looks at new housing plan

The Sisters City Council is on the verge of adopting a new housing plan that will make it easier and more attractive to developers to build "affordable" housing.

The plan went before the council earlier this month for a public hearing, which will continue on January 14.

The plan outlines strategies for the city, including developing a housing trust fund; creating a comprehensive incentive program for developers of affordable housing; making sure city policies don't hinder affordable housing efforts; and preserving existing housing stocks by promoting existing housing programs.

City staff recommends that the council amend the plan to adopt some strategies now and form a housing advisory board to revise remaining strategies and new strategies for recommendation to the city council.

The council has not yet identified which strategies it would implement now and which would wait for the housing advisory board.
