District changes special ed plans

In a victory for a group of parent activists, the Sisters School District agreed last week to modify its plans to move special education teacher Susie Werts from the middle school to Sisters High School.

Instead, the district will hire a part-time reading instructor for the high school to alleviate a caseload of 42 students with one teacher.

The district had originally planned to move part of Werts' time to the high school, a proposal that concerned middle school parents who see her work with their children as vital and successful.

Members of the Sisters Parent Network met with district staff earlier this month to air their concerns and offer alternative solutions, and the school board agreed last week to leave Werts in place and authorize hiring to meet the need at Sisters High School.
