Computer club delivers refurbished computer

Cooper Gould, of the Sisters 4-H Computer Club, made a family's Christmas this year.

The Sisters youth delivered the computer club's first refurbished computer to Teri and MacAllister Hart last Thursday.

The club takes castoff computers and renders them serviceable for a new owner. They are donated to income-qualifying families.

"Mainly what we did is wipe all the data that was on the hard drive off and reloaded the operating system, which makes it like a brand new computer," Gould said.

4-H club members got training in the work from Jason Wakeman, who formerly owned a computer store in Redmond. They also have the capability to fix hardware.

"If we need to and we have the parts to, we can," said Gould. "We won't do that as much because we don't have any scrap computers."

Used computers may be donated to the program at Habitat ReStore, on Fir Street. 4-H Club advisor Sterling Williver volunteers there and will collect the computers.

"We really don't want printers," Williver noted. "You can buy a printer cheaper than we can buy cartridges to see if the old printer works."

The club is seeking more families to donate to.

"We've got four or five more ready to go," Williver said.
