News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Dominated by an impressively deep Cascade team (132 points), an unusually large group from Blanchet (95 points) and a strong Stayton squad (91 points), the Outlaws girls (78 points) fought hard and definitely had it in them to finish second.
However, the girls could not enter a swimmer in each event, which contributed to the final score.
The "A" medley relay with Michelle Young, Katie Stewart, Tia Berg and Courteney Satko started off the meet with an impressive race, winning the event with ease.
Freshman Katie Stewart added a second-place in the 200-meter freestyle race behind national swimmer Crystal Kibby, who easily won the event in a personal best of 2:10.70.
Courteney Satko, coming off a quad muscle injury, and Michelle Young went first and second in the 50-meter freestyle, keeping 46 other competitors well behind. Satko and Young finished within 0.26 seconds of each other.
The 200-meter freestyle "A" relay with Young (30.0), Berg (32.4), Stewart (30.2) and Satko (30.8) had the race all sewn up at the 150-meter mark, when Cascade's anchor Crystal Kibby showed off her national caliber and out-touched Satko by 0.20. The Outlaws finished in a time of 2:03.4.
Michelle Young added another second-place in the 100-meter backstroke. Crystal Kibby won this event as well.
And Katie Stewart finished first in the last individual event, the 100-meter breaststroke and added an eight-point contribution to the Outlaws' final score.
Additional point-earning places for the girls: Medley relay "B": 7th place, Johnson, Greaney, Tigard, Williamson; 50-m freestyle: 6th, Tia Berg; 400-m freestyle: 3rd, Tia Berg; 100-m backstroke: 6th, Hillary Johnson.
The Outlaws' next competition is on January 20 in Molalla.
