News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Starting next week, the Sisters Chorale is set to begin a new season leading up to their annual spring concert, which will be held on an as- yet-to-be-determined date in May. The singers have been on break since performing Christmas concerts at Sisters Community Church last month.
Irene Liden serves as director of the local community choir and has already put together a tentative list of selections for the new term. "The music will be a coupe of musical theater pieces," said Liden, "maybe an opera chorus or two, Randall Thompson's 'Alleluia,' spirituals, and others to be arranged according to the personnel of the chorale."
The "personnel" Liden refers to are all local residents, and she hopes to encourage reluctant would-be singers to show up and give it a try.
"No auditions are required," Liden said, "and the chorale is open to singers of all ages."
There is plenty of room for more singers in the chorale, especially since there is always some turnover. Last term's choir consisted of a total of 57 singers, but only 16 were men. Tenors and basses are always in demand; so Liden is particularly hopeful that some new male singers will choose to exercise their vocal cords with the chorale this season, but she emphasized that all are welcome.
The first practice of the new session will be held on Monday, January 25. The Sisters Chorale practices from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday evenings at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, which is located at 386 N. Fir St. in Sisters.
Interested singers are invited to just show up or, for further information, contact Irene Liden at 541-549-1037 or by e-mail at [email protected]
