News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Cougars still prowling Sisters Country

A Sisters resident found a cougar kill near his home on Longhorn Drive on Friday, February 5.

A Deschutes County Sheriff's Office deputy and a liaison for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife investigated the carcass of a partially eaten deer and confirmed that the deer had been killed by a cougar.

During the investigation, the liaison saw a large male cougar in the area of the kill. The cougar ran off after being startled by human activity. The cougar was not located after he ran from the area.

The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office remind the community of several protocols for dealing with cougars in our midst:

Do not disturb dead deer carcasses, especially if you believe the deer may be a cougar kill.

If there are confirmed cougar sightings such as this in your area, do not walk your dogs at night in the area. Supervise children and pets that are outside.

If you come in contact with a cougar, do not turn your back on the animal and run; move slowly, keeping the animal in view as you move away from the area. If there is a perceived danger to the community notify law enforcement as soon as possible.
