News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Despite calls from the announcer to "think snow," the rains never stopped at the annual Hoodoo Nordic Night Race held Thursday, February 11 under the lights at Hoodoo Mountain Resort. The weather didn't appear to cool the fires of the Outlaws skiers, who once again showed competitiveness against the powerful skiers from Summit High School.
A total of 175 skiers took part in the race, which included the regular OHSNO teams from Summit, Redmond, Bend, Sisters, Corvallis and Crescent Valley.
Devin Calvin, an eighth grader at Sisters Middle School, took part in the open middle school race prior to the varsity competition and did quite well, finishing seventh in 8:10 on the two-kilometer loop, even after a very long active day at Hoodoo for the eighth grade retreat.
Summit dominated the boys' high school race, sweeping the top five places behind Pat Madden's winning effort of 11:24.5 for the four-kilometer course. After overcoming a crash by several racers in the first part of the race, Parker Bennett battled with Redmond's Eli Forman for sixth place, but fell one second short to capture seventh in 12:17.6.
Alex Yinger placed 16th in 13:59.4, while Mason Calmettes ended up 28th in 15:07 to complete the team scoring for the Outlaws.
The remaining Outlaws skiers included Jake Lasken (16:05), Andy Thomas (17:43) and Erik Lund (19:04).
Courtney Blust led the way for the Sisters girls team, placing sixth (17:41) in a very close contest in which less than 30 seconds separated second place from sixth.
The winner, Isabella Smith of Summit, trounced the rest of the field (15:59.5) with a winning margin of 1:13 over second place.
Amity Calvin narrowly missed breaking into the top ten, placing 11th in 18:31.8. The Outlaws' regular third-position skier, Janelle Hjelmstad, could not ski due to illness.
Riley Barrett (24:16), Emi Conrads (25:56), and Jenna Rheuben (28:42), rounded out the Outlaws team.
"The night race is always one of the highlights of the ski season," said head coach Tom Blust. "The rain didn't keep kids from skiing hard and enjoying themselves."
Fun appeared to be the goal of a pair of Summit junior varsity boy skiers, including former Sisters resident Dylan Randall, who competed shirtless in the driving rain and 33-degree temperature.
On Saturday, most of the Outlaws skiers took part in the Winterfest ski sprint races in the Old Mill District. The short course races, on trucked-in snow, pit two racers against one another on an out-and-back straightaway. Courtney Blust won the "A" girls division, while Andy Thomas placed second in the "B" division. In one of the early rounds, Alex Yinger lost by a boot length to eventual champion Pat Madden of Summit.
The Outlaws will conclude the season with the OHSNO Northwest Championships February 26-27.Despite calls from the announcer to "think snow," the rains never stopped at the annual Hoodoo Nordic Night Race held Thursday, February 11 under the lights at Hoodoo Mountain Resort.
