Elizabeth L. Stoen

Elizabeth Louise Stoen passed away Thursday, February 25, 2010. Her battle with cancer ended comfortably and peacefully thanks to the wonderful caregivers at the Hospice House in Bend.

Elizabeth was born on August 31, 1940, in West Warwick, Rhode Island. The families of both of her parents immigrated to America from Poland. She was proud of her Polish heritage and loved to cook traditional Polish dishes for special occasions, a legacy she has passed on to her children.

A passion for gardening and the enjoyment of the outdoors were characteristic of Elizabeth. Her colorful flower beds filled with an interesting array of yard ornaments were a welcoming sight and a beauty many others found pleasure in. Her love for birds was evident in the numerous birdhouses and birdfeeders that adorned her yard.

Collecting teapots was another hobby Elizabeth loved. Her collection ranged from elegant to whimsical teapots of varying sizes and colors. She especially enjoyed displaying her beautiful things against a backdrop of white linen and lace.

In addition to cooking Polish food, Elizabeth excelled at cooking most any dish. She appreciated new foods and enjoyed a variety of cuisines that refined her palate.

Words like intelligent, inquisitive, confident and creative describe Elizabeth. She loved to learn new things. She was resourceful and organized. Elizabeth loved to laugh and found humor in the everyday things of life.

She was a "fun and nice Grammy" and loved her grandchildren greatly. Gentle strength and an internal fortitude were so apparent in her last days. The sweet caring spirit she exhibited touched many around her and unveiled her deep beauty.

Elizabeth is survived by siblings Frank Mlyniec, Jr. of Rhode Island, Marion Mingura of Washington, Edward Viggers of California and John Park of Australia. Her children, Brent Hart of North Carolina, Chris Hart of California, Teri Hart from Sisters, and Caryn Loomis of California. Elizabeth has eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth - sister, mother, Grammy, Grandma and friend - will be sorely missed by all.

Memorials may be made in Elizabeth's name at the Bank of the Cascades to benefit Central Oregon cancer patients.
