Two nabbed in stolen car incident

Law enforcement officers from Bend Police, the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office and Oregon State Police tracked down a pair of Montana men in connection with a stolen car and a high-speed chase last week.

Police located 20-year-old Zachary Bergman, of Montana, last Friday after he eluded police on Thursday in multiple chases involving a stolen vehicle.

Police found him hiding in a duplex on S.E. Wilson Ave. in the city of Bend. Bergman was located based on information obtained from an anonymous source stating Bergman was hiding at this location with possible associates. Bergman was taken into custody without incident, according to sheriff's office reports.

Shortly after Bergman's arrest, the sheriff's office was able to locate a vehicle stolen from Eagle Crest at 3rd and Central, east of

Sisters.

This vehicle was reported to have been stolen sometime overnight close to the area Bergman was last seen fleeing. Police believe Bergman was responsible for the theft of that vehicle and he could face additional charges for that act.

Sheriff's deputies and detectives are continuing their investigations into any other criminal acts Bergman and Kelvon Kallowat, 18, of Montana, may have been involved with in the local area. Bergman and Kallowat could face additional charges in the coming days. The public is encouraged to contact the Sheriff's Office at 541-388-6655 with any possible information regarding Bergman and Kallowat being involved in criminal acts.

The arrest last Friday stemmed from an incident in the Sisters area on Thursday afternoon.

According to Deschutes County Sheriff's Office reports, a deputy responded to the area of Highway 20 between Bend and Sisters at about 1:15 p.m. on Thursday, March 25, on a report of a stolen vehicle. The stolen vehicle was described as a 2006 Dodge 300 with Montana personalized license plate KDGKOP. This vehicle was reported as being stolen in Kalispell, Montana on March 14, 2010.

As the deputy was arriving in the area he located the described stolen vehicle driving westbound on Highway 20 near Sagebrush Lane. The deputy attempted a traffic stop.

As the deputy attempted a traffic stop, the suspect driver, Kelvon Kallowat, 18, of Montana, immediately began eluding the deputy at high rates of speed. The initial pursuit speeds reached between 90 and 100 miles per hour. Based on the speeds being traveled and the fact the pursuit was headed towards the City of Sisters, sheriff's deputies terminated the chase.

Members from the Deschutes County Sheriffs Office, Oregon State Police, Redmond Police Department and Black Butte Ranch Police Department continued looking for the vehicle in areas surrounding Sisters.

While remaining in the area, attempting to find the stolen vehicle, another Deschutes County Sheriff's deputy spotted the vehicle traveling east on Highway 126 near milepost 103. The deputy attempted to stop the stolen vehicle, and a second pursuit took place on Highway 126 heading from Sisters towards Redmond.

The second pursuit again reached excessive speeds, causing members from the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office, Oregon State Police, and Redmond Police Department to establish a perimeter in hopes of using spike strips to safely disable the stolen vehicle.

The suspect vehicle was last reported to be seen fleeing from Highway 126 west of Redmond near the Eagle Crest Resort.

It was learned from witnesses that the vehicle was seen turning from Cline Falls Highway towards Eagle Crest. An extensive area search of Eagle Crest was conducted for the stolen vehicle.

A short time later the stolen vehicle was located parked in a wooded area on the upper west side of the golf course in Eagle Crest. Also with the vehicle were two suspects; Kallowat and Bergman. A sheriff's deputy and Redmond police officer attempted contact with the suspects on nearby Black Bird Court in Eagle Crest. The suspects, seeing law enforcement, fled on foot through the golf course, leaving the stolen vehicle behind.

Police, including a K-9 from the Redmond Police Department set a perimeter and Kallowat, the driver of the stolen vehicle, was taken into custody a short time later on the golf course. An extensive area search was conducted for the second suspect, Bergman, later identified as the passenger.

Bergman was nabbed a day later.

The initial investigation to this incident has determined the stolen car was taken from a residential burglary in Kalispell, Montana. Kallowat and Bergman are the alleged suspects in that burglary and the theft of the vehicle from that residence, according to police. There is also information both have participated in other criminal acts in the state of Washington and the local area.
