News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The girls tennis team defeated the White Buffs of Madras 7-1 on April 8.
Marien Tresnie (No. 1 singles) dominated her match and defeated Stephanie Stovall 6-1, 6-1. Tresnie played steady throughout the match, was very accurate with her shots and just didn't miss. Stovall struggled with Tresnie's top spin and her serves in both sets.
No. 2 singles, Becky Thomas defeated Courtney Lindgren 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. After a tough loss in the first set, Thomas regrouped and came back to win the match.
"Becky bent her knees, stayed low and got her serves in to get the win," said Coach Marti Dale.
Choe Stein, in the No. 3 singles spot, beat Stephanie Garcia 6-3, 6-1. Stein played a conservative match, stayed back and strategically placed the ball to keep it in play.
Nancy Lopez (No. 4 singles) battled for over three hours in her match against Veronia Zomara, but lost with scores of 6-3, 4-6 and 6-7 (3-7).
"These girls were very well matched and Nancy played well," said Dale. "In the tie-break the wind was blowing hard and was a big factor."
The Outlaws swept the courts in doubles play with victories from all four teams.
Elise Herron and Jen Houk (No. 1) dominated play in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Celena Avila and Shelia Munez.
"Elise and Jen had really good cross-court return which set up the next play which was usually a putaway at the net," said Dale. "They had good lobs and mixed it up, and it was difficult for their opponents to figure out where their weakness was."
Lauren Rudinsky and Nicole Webb (No. 2 doubles) beat Linna Patel and Jessica Valezques 6-4, 6-3. Rudinsky had great drives down the line and across the court, which were key in the win.
No. 3 doubles, Maddie Green and Tiffany Bigelow, crushed Allison Adams and Diane Gonzalez with scores of 6-0, 6-1. This was the first time Green and Bigelow had played doubles in over one-and-a-half years and they were pleased with the outcome of their first match. The duo communicated well, covered the court well and had solid serves throughout the match.
Shennan Chick and Jazmyn Gill (No. 4 doubles) made their first appearance as varsity players and defeated Brianna Pineda and Ivette Ruiz 6-4, 6-4. Chick and Gill played a consistent, steady game and according to Dale the duo had more desire to win than their opponents.
Dale was very happy with her team and the progress they have made.
"Our top girls are getting better and looking good. Their competition experience will take them a long way and they've got lots of motivation and drive," said Dale.
Sisters will compete in the Madras Tournament on Saturday, April 17.
