News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Jeff Fought and Jonathan Standen both posted scores at district that earned them a berth to the state tournament. Fought carded an 83-82-165 and Standen posted a 80-87-167 at the district tourney on Monday and Tuesday, May 9 and 10. The duo were to head to Creswell for the state championships May 17-18.
As a team, the Outlaws weren't at the top of their game and unfortunately weren't able to beat Junction City, and lost their chance to advance to state.
Marist took top honors with a team score of 634 and Junction City placed second at 658. Sisters took third at 677; Cottage Grove (744) and La Pine finished at 766.
Fought and Standen both birdied the first hole (par 4) in the second round of play. Jeff hit a good drive that landed about 80 yards from the pin and then used his sand wedge to place the ball to within two-and-a-half feet of the cup and hit the putt for the birdie.
Standen also birdied the first hole on day two, which proved to be the highlight of the entire round.
"The birdie got me going but I struggled from there all the way into the clubhouse," Standen said.
Fought and Standen's scores earned them second team all-league recognition.
Coach Jeff Barton said, "Jeff was consistent in all phases of his game both days. He played his best golf of the season at the most important time. It was a clutch performance. Jonathan was good the first day and hung on the second day which showed some mental toughness on his part. He persevered and got it done."
Zach Cummings also had a good showing at district and earned honorable mention recognition.
Fought was out at the beginning of the season with a broken finger and was finally able to play the last four matches of the year without a splint.
