News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Jeff Fought and Jonathan Standen represented Sisters at the 4A boys' golf state championships held at the Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell on Monday and Tuesday, May 17-18. The pair were two out of 90 competitors to compete at the tourney.
Fought, in his second appearance at state, carded an 85 on both days to finish at 167 in a four-way tie for 19th place. A birdie on hole 11 (par 3) on day two was a highlight for Jeff.
"I hit the ball with my seven iron to the green and was within 12 feet of the hole," said Fought. "My next shot was perfect and I sunk the putt."
Fought added, "The tournament was a lot of fun. I knew going in that I couldn't win and I felt I played decent. I know I could have done better and I plan to practice in the off-season and come back and do better next year."
Standen shot an 86 in the first round of play and on day two bettered his score by two strokes with an 84 for a two-day total of 170. Standen finished in an eight-way tie for 30th place.
Coach Jeff Barton said, "Both boys played pretty well and finished in the top half of the tournament. I think they were a little disappointed with their performance, but all in all they performed well. It was a very hard course with very difficult greens, so putting was a struggle."
Marist won the state tourney with a team score of 323-318-641 and LaSalle was runner-up at 331-318-649. Other top scores were Brookings Harbor 329-335-664, Seaside 337-338-675 and Phoenix 333-344-677. Junction City, the No. 2 Sky-Em competitor, finished at 350-344-682.
