News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Madeline Emily Grimstad, age 85, passed away Friday, May, 7, 2010 due to multiple health issues.
She was born March 10, 1925 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada to Isabel and Arthur Carroll.
Madeline Carroll and Gerrie Knudsen, high school sweethearts, were married in 1945 and had two sons, Bob, currently of Richland, Washington and Bruce, currently of Tigard. Madeline and Gerrie Knudsen lived in Sault Ste. Marie, Hamilton, Toronto, and Guelph, Ontario before they moved to Portland in 1963. At the time of Gerrie's death in 1975, he was employed with Omark Industries and Madeline worked for a Portland brokerage firm.
Madeline was devoted to her sons, to her daughters-in-law, Donelle Knudsen and Tessy Knudsen, and her four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She always saw the good in people and was known for her generosity in thought and deed.
Madeline purchased a lot in Tollgate early in the 1980s, primarily because of her and Gerrie's love of the Pacific Northwest, especially Central Oregon. She built a vacation home in 1988 to which she and her second husband, Neal Grimstad, moved permanently in 1990. She embraced Neal's three children and eight grandchildren, and drew them into her family circle. Madeline was involved with Habitat for Humanity and Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. She and Neal lived in Sisters until health issues forced them to return to Tigard in 2004. Her home in Sisters has become a retreat and second home to her family.
Madeline was the second oldest of nine siblings. Two survive her: Brian Carroll and Marilyn Martin, both of Ontario, Canada, as well as several nieces and nephews.
The family will have a private gathering in Sisters at a later date. In memory of Madeline, family suggests contributions to Habitat for Humanity, Prevent Cancer Foundation: http://www.preventcancer.org or the Alzheimer's Association: http://www.alz.org.
