Marine Tresnie, foreign exchange student from Belgium, competed at the 4A/3A/2A/1A state tennis tournament held Thursday through Saturday, May 20-22, at the University of Oregon, and performed well.
Tresnie played Thursday at 5 p.m. and won the pigtail round to qualify to play in the main draw. Marine overpowered Kellie Hodges of Umatilla and easily won in two sets with scores of 6-0, 6-0.
Marine topped Sara Bond of Ontario 6-3, 6-3, in Friday morning's match. Tresnie's experience was evident in her consistent serves. Marine took advantage of the short balls and the second serve to crush Bond in the match. She drove the ball with power down the line and Bond was not able to return it. The win sent Tresnie into the quarterfinal match.
At 3 p.m. on Friday, Tresnie found herself in the quarterfinal match against No. 1 seed, Kaitlyn Lomartire of Valley Catholic. Lomartire bested Marine in two sets, 6-3, 6-3.
"Marine played to the best of her ability, but Lomartire set up her plays, attacked at the net and had an exceptional backhand," said Coach Marti Dale. "She went on to win the championships."
The loss brought an end to Tresnie's tournament play. Dale was thrilled with Tresnie's performance.
"Marine was a joy to watch and it was incredible to see her compete at that level," said Dale. "She's a good, solid player. She never gives a game away. Her opponents have got to work to get a win from her."
At the close of the tournament Oregon Episcopal School (OES) was declared the state champion. OES finished with a team score of 16 points. Valley Catholic was runner-up with eight points and Vale finished third, with seven.
