News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Patricia Beth Smith March 9, 1930 - June 16, 2010

After a long and valiant battle with cancer, Patti passed away on Wednesday afternoon, surrounded by family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Bud Smith of Sisters; her daughter, Linda Knight of Bend; her son, David Weatherred of Spokane, WA; four grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by her yellow Lab, Jake, and her orange cat, Farley.

Patti was born in Detroit, Michigan, to Prudy and Irving Butterfield. She graduated from Highland Park High School, attended community college for two years and then married Chuck Weatherred in 1950. Patti and Chuck divorced in 1960 in Mt. Clemens, Michigan.

Patti married Bud Smith in 1961 and moved to Greenville, Michigan. Bud's career as a labor negotiator and human resources executive would take the family to Boise, Idaho; Tigard, Oregon; Kennewick, Washington; and eventually to Sisters, where they built their "someday" home in 1994 and retired.

While in Boise, Tigard and Kennewick, Patti became an accomplished interior designer of homes and several hotel chains. She and Bud spent their weekends and vacations traveling the western United States. They were happiest when they were camping and fishing, alone or with friends, sometimes as far away as Alaska. Their very favorite place to go was the Metolius River. They spent as much time as possible at The House on the

Metolius.

Patti and Bud joined the Sisters Rodeo Association when they moved to Sisters and immediately became very active members. Patti worked in the rodeo ticket office in downtown Sisters for many years, and they never missed a rodeo until this year. She was a best friend to everyone she met and loved to have "lunch with the

ladies."

Patti was the hub of our family. She was the one who always knew what was happening with everyone and would make sure that we all stayed close. She loved all holidays, especially Christmas, and always knew how to make them special for everyone. She loved her family and friends deeply and always made sure that they knew it. She was a great cook, golfer and a creative designer. She was a wonderful mom, a great best friend and a devoted wife. She will be missed terribly.

A celebration of Pat's life will be held on Friday, June 25, 1:30 p.m. at the Sisters Rodeo Clubhouse.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
