Sisters welcomes new community librarian

Two events coincided with the arrival of Colleen Galvin, the new Community Librarian at the Sisters Library: The retirement of much-loved long-term library manager Peg Bermel, and the restructuring of the Deschutes Public Library System (DPLS).

Galvin spent the last three years working her way up the administrative ladder of DPLS in La Pine, beginning as the Teens Services Librarian, then on to Children's Librarian and finally to manager. In those capacities, she served the patrons faithfully and with great energy, and now she brings all that energy and drive to the Sisters area.

With the restructuring within DPLS, Colleen and Zoe Schumacher (formally the Sisters Library Children's Librarian) share responsibility for operating and providing services at the Sisters Library. Schumacher is taking care of the nuts and bolts of daily library operations, while Galvin will be expanding the library's role within the Sisters Country community.

Colleen began her library career attending library school at the University of Illinois in Chicago, where she earned her master's degree in library science.

"I'm very excited to be working in Sisters," she said.

As a community librarian, Galvin is looking forward to introducing the variety of services available to the all areas of the Sisters community, including the businesses in the area.

"I'd like to continue to promote the library for more than pleasure reading, but also to supply the right resource to the right person at the right time," she said.
