News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Poor Man's Roses will be playing Thursday nights on the Bronco Billy's patio stage through August.
The group first performed as a duo with singer Beth Gengenbach and Brian Cash on acoustic guitar at the 2010 Sisters Rodeo locals' party. Recently, the band added Greg Young on piano. The resulting three-part harmony has prompted goosebumps in audiences since.
Gengenbach grew up in the Midwest but has made Sisters her home. "I just love the outdoors, the climate here, and I have made so many friends."
Cash has been a part of Sisters since 1999. He chuckles when asked if he's related to the famous singer Johnny. "Johnny's daughter Rosanne and I had a Twitter exchange about that recently," he said. "She also wanted to know if we were related. I let her know we're not, and we had a good laugh."
Young immediately fit right in, adding another vocal and his rollicking piano. He recently settled in Sisters after many years on the road with his previous band.
The band name is a tribute to Patsy Cline and their modern interpretation of the many classic country standards on their setlist.
"We have a number of original tunes between us and we'll be working on a CD this winter after we've played together for a while," Cash says. "There is also a Facebook page and a Web site at http://www.pmroses.com for our friends that can't catch the act live."
Poor Man's Roses is playing from 6 to 8 p.m. every Thursday night through August 26.
