Boys soccer suffers tough losses

The boys soccer team lost 6-1 to Madras on Tuesday, September 14, and two days later lost 2-1 at Henley in a very close game.

Foreign exchange student Stefan Boelle, who is playing soccer here for the first time, scored Sisters' lone goal in their 6-1 loss at home to the White Buffaloes on

Tuesday.

Eduardo Lopez of Madras scored three goals within a 15-minute period early in the game and at the half the White Buffaloes were up 3-0.

Sisters' goal came at the 73-minute mark. Boelle entered the game for the first time, took a pass from Sebastian Boehm, dribbled toward the goal and made the shot.

"As I was dribbling a defensive player jumped at my legs and as I was falling down I was able to kick the ball in with my toes," said Boehm.

Madras tacked on three additional goals in the second half to beat the Outlaws by five in a final score of 6-1.

Coach Rob Jensen said, "We had a lack of communication on the defensive end. We have some work to do but I feel that they're simple fixes. It's good to have this happen now instead of later in the season. We have lots of time to fix the mental errors on defense.

Boelle told The Nugget that he loves playing soccer in America.

"I love playing soccer here," said Boelle, "but some of the rules are definitely different in Germany. Substitution is limited and teams are only allowed to substitute three players once per game."

On Thursday, the Outlaws were defeated by the Henley Hornets in their last pre-season game.

Sisters went up 1-0 in the first half just 10 minutes into the game. Freddy Gonzalez made a pass to Tim Hernandez who kicked it in from the 10-yard mark at the near post for the goal.

Henley responded in the 23rd minute on a breakaway shot from 10 yards out and scored to tie it up 1-1.

The game remained tied until the 66th minute of the second half. Sisters got a penalty and the Hornets got a direct kick from 25 yards out. Henley kicked a straight on goal and scored to go up 2-1 and hold on for the win.

Jensen told The Nugget that it was a pretty even game and that the Outlaws played much better than in their previous game with Madras.

"We had some good opportunities to score but just couldn't get it in," said Jensen. "Devon (Prescott) headed one that just missed the mark to tie and we messed up on a breakaway."

But, on a positive note Jensen added, "We played without two of our starters and to compete with a playoff team and be in a position to win says a lot about how good our team can be."

The Outlaws are currently 2-2 overall and were to kick off league play at Junction City on Tuesday, September 21. Sisters will play at home on Thursday, September 23, against the Lions of Cottage Grove.
