Sisters Habitat recognizes volunteers

Sisters Habitat for Humanity runs on the work of volunteers. Some of them are quite visible - the folks who swing the hammers to build the homes; the people who man the Thrift Store and Habitat ReStore.

Others are less visible - the people who serve on family selection committees, site selection committees and the like.

Habitat boasts nearly 300 volunteers serving in the Thrift Store, ReStore, building crew, on the board of directors and seven standing committees. Together, they make Sisters Habitat for Humanity an extraordinarily vibrant chapter in the international organization.

Last Wednesday, staff and the board of directors of the Sisters chapter gathered at Sisters' Village Green Park to celebrate those many volunteers. Board President Larry Lennon kicked things off by noting that the volunteer-operated Thrift Store brought in $131,000 for the chapter's building fund, while the ReStore brought in $60,000.

"In addition to that," Lennon noted, "they kept over one million pounds of waste out of our trash."

The highlight of the event was the honoring of 20 people who have donated 1,000 hours or more to Habitat (for a list of 1,000 volunteers, see the online version of this story at www.nuggetnews.com).

Those in attendance were called to stand, and each received a small flower arrangement created by Flowers by Deanna.

Sharlene Weed, Habitat's executive director, noted that Roy Slicker of Slick's Que Co. donated the catering for the event for the second year in a row.

"This is a huge donation," she said. "Roy is an enthusiastic supporter of Habitat and we are grateful that he can help us honor the volunteers with a fabulous meal."

Weed also noted that a variety of volunteer positions are always available. New volunteer orientations are held monthly on the third Wednesday at noon. Contact Program Manager Marie Clasen to RSVP or schedule an alternate time: 541-549-1193 or [email protected]
