News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Letters to the Editor 10/06/2010

To the Editor:

I write this letter in support of Wendy Holzman for Sisters City Council.

I have served on the Committee for Citizen Involvement for the past two years with Wendy as its current chair. I have been impressed with Wendy's leadership skills. Sometimes this is a hard thing to define but it's one of those things that you "know it when you see it." She is always well organized, knows her subject matter and keeps the conversation going. Also, I can't think of Wendy running a meeting without hearing her laughter. She enjoys working with people and that enjoyment is infectious for all involved.

Her participation with the Sisters Visioning Process, city code updates, city parks, Scenic Bikeway and The Ford Family Foundation all add up to a person who is deeply committed to the future of Sisters. Such a commitment combined with her innate leadership skills make for an ideal city council member. Vote for Wendy!

To the Editor:

The City of Sisters is creating a Parks Master Plan! We need your help to tell us what you think about our current parks and what improvements can be made in the coming years. This online survey at http://www.ci.sisters.or.us is one of the steps in this exciting process.

The survey should take about 10 minutes to complete. This information will be used to complete the needs assessment portion of the Parks Master Plan.

If you have any questions regarding the survey, please contact Amanda West at the University of Oregon's Community Planning Workshop, 541-346-3615, or Pauline Hardie with the City of Sisters, 541-323-5208.

Thank you for your participation!

Pauline Hardie, AICP

To the Editor:

Wendy Holzman is involved, cares and takes the time to understand the issues.

I've been on the Committee for Citizen Involvement with Wendy for the last two years and I have observed Wendy's commitment to the town of Sisters time and again.

She participates in meetings, asks questions, looks for ways to get involved, educates herself and works very hard to educate and involve the public in the affairs of our local government. I can't think of a more prepared person to step into a council seat and hit the ground running.

To the Editor:

Once again, Central Oregon Fire Prevention Cooperative as well as News Channel 21 and local sponsors are joining forces to promote an innovative, educational fire safety program for elementary school children in grades Kindergarten through 4th called

"Firebusters."

The basis of the Firebusters program is a five-part news series which will air October 4-9 on Z21 KTVZ at 6 p.m. Each night News Channel 21 will focus on one of five safety subjects with segments designed for school children.

All parents play an important role in the success of this program. We strongly encourage parents to watch this quality fire safety program with their children and discuss these life safety skills.

Each elementary class will receive student worksheets. Each student will take the worksheet home to watch this portion of the news with you and the family.

After the worksheet has been completed please return it to the school office no later than Monday October 18, 2010. This will allow the child to be eligible for a drawing of bicycles with helmets, Firebusters T-shirts, frisbees and more.

We sincerely hope you will support our efforts to teach children these lifesaving lessons through your child's participation in the FIREBUSTERS program. Thank you from the Central Oregon Fire Prevention Co-op - Sisters Area Fire Prevention Group.
