News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Ted Lynch, DDS, is returning to his original specialty, adding pediatric dentistry to his practice at Outlaw Orthodontics.
"I feel there's a need for a pediatric dentist," he told The Nugget. "A lot of general dentists don't feel comfortable working with kids."
His practice will serve infants, young children, teens and medically compromised or handicapped youths. He will also treat patients on the Oregon Health Plan.
"Right now we're seeing kids from birth through 16," Lynch said.
Lynch believes the two practices - pediatric dentistry and orthodontia - complement each other. As a dentist, he can track dental issues that may require orthodontic intervention from the earliest stages. He can also stay on top of hygiene issues during orthodontic treatment.
"We work with kids all the time," he said. "We're comfortable with kids. We introduce them to dentistry in the least-menacing, least-fear-inducing way possible. You only get one shot at making their first experience with dentistry a good one."
Pediatric dentistry was Lynch's original specialty. He entered school in 1974 and was certified through Indiana University School of Dentistry and trained at James Williams Riley Hospital for Children.
"I've been a pediatric dentist longer than I've been an orthodontist, by far," he said.
He noted that he has always retained some special-needs patients.
Lynch said he originally wanted to combine both practices because of inspiration from his mentor in Indiana, Warren Bailey Davis.
"I admired him and wanted to emulate him," he said. "I enjoyed the pluses of bringing both together."
Outlaw Orthodontics has suffered from the impacts of recession.
"There's definitely been a downturn in patients because it (orthodontia) is definitely somewhat elective in nature," he said.
Outlaw Orthodontics is located at 704 W. Hood Ave., Ste. D. For more information call 541-549-4267.
