Outlaws fall to Cottage Grove

The Outlaws football team suffered their third straight loss in league play on Friday, October 15, at Cottage Grove.

The team played better than the 54-12 tally on the scoreboard suggests. According to Coach Bob Macauley, it was the Outlaws' best game so far.

"The score looks bad, but we didn't play bad," stated Macauley. "I liked the way we played, especially our defense. Our defensive backs played man-to-man and covered them well, but their kids made some big plays. They threw six touchdowns over the top of us."

With five minutes left in the first quarter, the game was scoreless at 0-0, but the Outlaws found out that the Lions can strike quickly. Cottage Grove threw three long bombs of 58, 50 and 72 yards for three touchdowns, and at the close of the first quarter the Lions held a 20-0 lead.

"They've got talent at quarterback and receivers," said Macauley. "Our defensive backs were right there, but their kids made good plays."

Midway through the second quarter Zech Mickel scored on a 30-yard completion from quarterback Erik Carlson and Sisters put six points on the scoreboard. The Lions struck deep with 23-, 20- and 35-yard completions, each for a touchdown, and at the half Cottage Grove had extended their lead to 41-6.

Sisters gave up two more touchdowns in the second half and scored one of their own. Ethan Luloff scored on a 19-yard run for a TD in the third quarter.

Although the game ended in a loss, Macauley was pleased with his team.

"It was good football and our kids competed every play," said Macauley.

The coach noted in particular that defensive players Shane Groth, Steven Nemer and Mitch Keranan played extremely well and did a good job up the middle.

Sisters finished the game with 278 yards of total offense. Jalen Miller rushed 17 times for 100 yards and Ethan Luloff rushed three times for 28 yards and a touchdown. Zech Mickel had five catches for 82 yards and a touchdown, and according to Macauley had his best game to date.

"I think we can finish strong, which is a testament to our kids' character considering we are 2-5 overall," Macauley said.

Sisters takes on league rival La Pine at home on Friday, October 22.
