Magical Voices sing out in Sisters

The Magical Voices of Christmas, on December 5 at Sisters High School, is one way Sisters Country residents can get into the holiday spirit.

In its 14th year, the musical event features local and regional talent. Singing, dancing, instrumental music and a sing-along at the end gives the audience a feeling of hometown warmth in the midst of busy holiday preparations. And the homemade cookies at intermission, all baked by local Rotary Club members, add to the cozy atmosphere.

There's also an altruistic focus to the evening. The event is sponsored by Sisters Rotary and is free to the public. Local businesses support the concert by advertising in the event program and individuals are invited to become "Friends of Santa" for $25. These funds are channeled back into the music programs at the three Sisters schools.

Two new participants are on the program this year. The Gospel Choir of the Cascades is set to wind up the first half of the show, and the Central Oregon Irish Dancers bring their energy to the second half.

Choirs from each Sisters school are singing holiday and seasonal music. Janelle Johnson will perform a solo and Emily Woodworth and Cammie Benson each will entertain with a piano number. The Sisters High School Concert Band keeps things going in the commons during intermission. Photos with Santa are available at the end of the program.

The Magical Voices of Christmas began 14 years ago when Jim Craig, a Rotarian and barbershop quartet member, thought it would be nice to have a local holiday celebration where everyone could hear children singing and have a chance to sing Christmas carols together. A brainstorming session ensued, and Peg Bermel, then Sisters' head librarian, came up with the name, which has stuck ever since.

This year, the theme is A World of Christmas, and the music reflects that.

Doors open at 5:30 and the two-hour program begins at 6 p.m.
