Sisters School Board drafts new calendar

The Sisters School Board has adopted a draft version of a new school calendar.

The new calendar, approved at the board's Decemer 8 meeting, is designed to be much easier for parents to read and use. A draft copy of this calendar is on the district Web site for review and comment (www.sisters.k12.or.us).

For the first time in recent history, this school calendar is shared between elementary, middle and high schools. Also for the first time, key start and vacation dates are set for three years out. Each school year will start after Labor Day, and the one-week spring break will coincide with Oregon State University's calendar each year.

The last day of school is more difficult to set, due to such issues as snow days, union negotiations on number of contract days, budget changes and other factors.

There is some talk of possibly posting a Google Calendar version.

Superintendent Jim Golden's calendar committee members worked hard to complete a commitment board chair Chris Jones had made: to have a rolling three-year calendar published before her term expired.
