Deputy shoots dog during Sisters arrest

A Deschutes County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a dog on Tuesday morning when the deputy was attacked while attempting to arrest a Sisters man wanted on sex abuse charges.

According to sheriff's office reports, the deputy was attacked by five large dogs and bitten by one, though he was not injured.

The wanted man later surrendered.

Capt. Tim Edwards reported that a deputy spotted Thurlow Ernest Hanson, 66, in his yard at 16639 Bitterbrush in Sisters around 11 a.m. The deputy knew Hanson was wanted on a Deschutes County warrant on four counts of first-degree sex abuse and a New York state warrant on first-degree sexual conduct against a child.

When the deputy tried to contact Hanson the man's five German Shepherds attacked and the deputy was bitten and knocked to the ground, Edwards said.

The deputy fired one shot and hit one of the dogs, which later was found dead on the home's back porch.

Hanson and the dogs holed up in the home and the deputy retreated to his patrol car as other deputies and Black Butte Ranch police responded to assist and set up a perimeter around the house.

Hanson's attorney helped police contact Hanson by phone and he eventually walked out to the street and surrendered to deputies around 12:20 p.m.

Hanson is now held in jail on $100,000 bail on the Deschutes County warrant and faces extradition on the New York charges.
