Girls basketball wins league opener

The Lady Outlaws defeated the Huskies 41-35 at Sweet Home on Friday, January 14, in their first league game of the season.

Sisters jumped out to a quick start and led by six at the close of the first quarter. Both teams put up 11 points in the second quarter, and at the half the Outlaws still held the lead, 21-15. Sisters maintained good defensive pressure throughout the second half to secure the win.

Sisters also showed poise in running their offense and were effective from the paint and from the perimeter.

Coach Julianne Horner told The Nugget that this was the team's best performance of the season.

Taylor Nieri led Sisters with 11 points, including one three-pointer. Nieri was also 4/6 from the free throw line. Carissa Kernutt put up eight points for the Outlaws, Marin Allen contributed six and Chelsie McConville added five.

Katie Yozamp scored four points and pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds.

Annie Whitfield of Sweet Home led the Huskies with 14 points.

Sisters is 1-0 in league and 4/11 overall.

The Lady Outlaws were to play at home on Tuesday, January 18, against Junction City. They will play at Cottage Grove on Friday. Games are scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m.
