News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Chilly weather returns to Sisters Country

A light dusting of snow on Monday reminded folks in the Sisters Country that it is, in fact, winter.

You'd never have known it by the weather we basked in through late January. While much of the country was buried in heavy snowstorms and the NFL playoffs went off in frigid temperatures, the Sisters Country enjoyed golden sunshine and temperatures that bumped up against the 60-degree mark.

Green shoots shot up where they shouldn't be for a couple more months and outdoor enthusiasts broke out the golf clubs and hiking boots instead of skis and snowshoes.

That changed this week. The sun will continue to shine down on the Sisters Country, but the National Weather Service is calling for more seasonable temperatures - with lows in the teens and 20s and highs in the 40s.

The lack of snow in the forecast is disappointing to skiers and snowboarders, but there's still plenty of snow on the slopes. Hoodoo Mountain Resort has a 41-inch base.

Winter may still have a punch or two in store through February and March. La Niña conditions are supposed to bring a wetter and colder-than-usual winter to the Pacific Northwest. That held true through the first part of the season and it may yet prove out.

For now, however, Sisters folks can continue to enjoy hiking on snow-free trails in lower elevations and stay tuned up for the golf season without having to head south.
