News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Lady Outlaws' basketball team trounced La Pine 67-43 at home on Friday, January 28. Three days earlier they notched a big 69-38 road win at Elmira.
The first half of the game against Elmira was a fairly close contest. Sisters led 11-9 at the close of the first quarter and by the half had pulled ahead by six at 23-17. The Outlaws blew the game open in the second half and outscored the Falcons 6-21 to secure the win and push Sisters to 3-1 in league.
Chelsie McConville and Taylor Nieri scored in double digits for Sisters, with each player posting 17 points on the night. McConville hit eight shots from the field and was 1/1 from the line. Nieri hit five shots from the field and was 7/11 from the line.
"A lot of my points came off great passes from my teammates, and good ball pressure allowed me to score on three steals," McConville said.
Marin Allen posted 10 points for the Outlaws, and Carissa Kernutt recorded eight. Sammy Kaiser found her sweet spot at the line and went a perfect 6/6. Elise Herron and Whitney Hansen each contributed four, and Harley Rowe added three.
Elmira has a strong post presence, and the Outlaws were pleased they held them below their season averages.
McConville said, "Elmira has got some big posts that average around six feet tall, and our posts did a great job of stopping them."
At home three days later the Lady Outlaws defeated the Lady Hawks of La Pine 67-43.
Marin Allen was the sparkplug that led to Sisters' strong start and quick lead in the first quarter. Allen knocked down nine points, including two three-pointers, and at the close of the period the Lady Outlaws held a 22-8 lead.
"Marin got us off to the best possible start we could have hoped for with her aggressive play on both ends of the floor, which really took La Pine out of their offense and opened the floor for us," said Coach Julie Horner.
Horner added, "Katie (Yozamp), Carissa (Kernutt), and Sammy (Kaiser) were forceful on the boards again, giving the Lady Outlaws multiple putback opportunities for points. Lauryn (Chauncey) was aggressive on the floor again, playing tenacious defense as well as taking two important charging violations by La Pine's top
players."
McConville commented on the team's progress over the past few weeks.
"We had a rough pre-season, but now a few games into league we're really coming together as a team and playing as one unit," she said.
Sisters is currently 4-1 in league and 7-10 overall. The Lady Outlaws will go up against the Huskies of Sweet Home at home on Friday, February 4, at 5:45 p.m.
