Acclaimed pianist to perform in Sisters

John Nilsen, among the most successful recording artists in the Northwest, will perform in Sisters on Friday, March 25, 7 p.m., at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. The public is invited to enjoy this evening of exceptional music with the renowned pianist.

Nilsen is highly respected in the music industry and has performed with a collection of well-known musicians, including Jose Feliciano, Jesse Colin Young, Alex DeGrassi and Kenny G.

He has also been a very successful recording artist, acknowledged for his continuing evolution as a composer and innovator. He has released seventeen recordings, many on his own label, Magic Wing. His recordings have sold nearly one million copies in the U.S., Europe, and Asia.

"John's music has a magical quality to it. Each new recording seems to be his best," according to KINK radio in Portland. His unique style has also been described as "carving a groove as natural as a river carves a canyon."

Nilsen was raised in Portland and is a graduate of Southern Oregon University. His music caught the attention of famed guitarist Guthrie Thomas, who launched Nilsen's career on his own Eagle Records label in Los Angeles nearly thirty years ago. His innovative style has made him sought after by many Northwest recording artists, but his heart is still in performing live.

"As a performer, I like exploring beyond the boundaries of my recorded songs," he says. "It gives me the chance to offer something special, spontaneous and personal to my audience."

The acclaimed pianist was a popular lounge performer at Black Butte Ranch in 1983. While in residency in Sisters, he practiced at the Lutheran church.

"Your door was open to me when I needed a place to practice piano," Nilsen said, "The church was so helpful to me."

This performance is how Nilsen chose to say thank you for what was so generously given to him. "I'm pretty excited about coming to Shepherd of the Hills," he said, promising a special night of music.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. for the free performance. Donations will be welcome. Refreshments will be served by the church after the hour-long concert. For more information, call 541-549-5831.
